NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. — A pedestrian was struck and killed Friday afternoon at a North Tonawanda shopping plaza.
The pedestrian's identity has since been released by North Tonawanda Police on Monday, September 30 as Faye Haner, 74, of North Tonawanda.
North Tonawanda Police Chief Keith Glass said a 74-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle while crossing through the crosswalk into the parking lot at Walmart. She was declared dead at the scene.
Chief Glass said, "Obviously it is a tragedy, our condolences are with the victim, the victim's family and the driver of the car as well, it's just not something you want to see happen,".
Police said a woman 51-year-old woman was driving an SUV and allegedly failed to yield and hit the woman. She is cooperating with the investigation police said.
"That's about all we can disclose right now," Chief Glass said during a brief news conference.
North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec said he talked with a Walmart manager, who talked with staff and employees about what happened.
"I did speak to the manager here at Walmart," Tylec said. "He is meeting with all his staff and employees, seeing how they're doing. Those that did see the incident that did occur, my understanding is that they will be providing mental health and resources for anyone that is struggling right now."
Tylec added that Walmart was cooperating with the investigation, talking with both the police and fire departments. Chief Glass said the store would be closed for at least two hours as crews investigated.
Chief Glass said more information might be released as it becomes available.
