Multiple people hurt in fatal Parkview Ave. fire

Buffalo Firefighters were called to 167 Parkview Avenue just after 11 p.m. Sunday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A 40-year-old man is dead after a fire in South Buffalo Sunday night that injured a city firefighter and three others in the home.

The man was rescued by firefighters and later died from a heart attack according to Buffalo Fire Commissioner William Renaldo.

On Monday family and friends confirmed the man's identity to 2 On Your Side but his name has not been officially released by the Buffalo Fire Department.

Fire crews were called to 167 Parkview Avenue just after 11 p.m. Sunday and were immediately met with heavy smoke conditions.

Two people who were tenants in the home were able to make it out of the fire largely on their own, including an older woman on the first floor who got help from a neighbor. Both were treated for smoke inhalation at ECMC.

Another person on the third floor was forced to jump to safety after Commissioner Renaldo said a Buffalo firefighter tried to get a ladder to him but injured himself. The person who jumped suffered a broken pelvis.

The Buffalo firefighter was taken to ECMC to be treated for second-degree burns to his face.

"He had taken a 24-foot ladder, which is the largest ladder that we have on one of our pumpers, and put it up to the garage on his own, to get to the top of the garage, brought the ladder up onto the garage, and tried to use the ladder to get to the third floor from the roof of the garage or as close as he could," said Commissioner Renaldo.

Investigators say the fire started on the first floor of the home but the cause is still under investigation. Damage is estimated at $250,000.

An emergency demolition notice was posted to the home on Monday.
