YORKSHIRE, N.Y. — New York State Police are investigating a fatal fire in the Town of Yorkshire in Cattaraugus County.
Troopers say they were called to 3825 Creek Road around 2:11 a.m. Friday for a report of a house fire. It had been a single-family, two-story home.
Multiple fire agencies were called in.
NYSP confirmed Friday afternoon that four people were found dead among the remains of the house. One family member had been able to safely exit at the time of the fire, and called 911.
Investigators say they believe started in the kitchen-area of the home. The home was significantly damaged from being engulfed in flames.
NYSP are working with the Pioneer Central School District, as one of the victims is believed to have been a student.
In a statement issued by the Pioneer Central School District they wrote, "It is with deep sadness that I share some heartbreaking news. Early this morning (9/6), we were notified by the New York State Police of a tragic house fire in our community, which has claimed the lives of members of the Cook family, residents of Yorkshire and part of our Pioneer Central School District family. In response to this tragedy, our district’s Crisis Response Team has been activated and is ready to support any students, staff, or community members affected. Counselors are available throughout the district to provide emotional support to those in need. Our hearts go out to the Cook family, and we encourage everyone to lean on each other during this difficult time. The strength of our community lies in our ability to come together and offer support, especially in moments of such great sadness."
Positive identifications of the victims will be made by the medical examiner's officer, and names will be released following.
