BUFFALO, N.Y. — During the Halloween holiday the New York State Police had their annual DWI enforcement campaign from October, 31 to November, 3 and issued over 9,000 tickets.
According to a NYS Police press release "During the campaign, State Police utilized sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and ticketed distracted drivers who used handheld electronic devices. Troopers also used both marked State Police vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement (CITE) vehicles as part of this crackdown in order to more easily identify motorists who were violating the law. These vehicles blend in with everyday traffic but are unmistakable as emergency vehicles once the emergency lighting is activated."
During the enforcement period NYS Police issued tickets for the following:
- 176 people arrested for DWI
- 964 accidents, 3 of which were fatalities
- 3,590 speeding tickets
- 270 distracted driving tickets
- 370 seatbelt violations
- 129 disobeying the move over law
In total they issued 9,984 tickets statewide. In 2023 the Halloween enforcement period was one day longer than 2024 and NYS Police had issued 13,115 total tickets and arrested 207 people for DWI.
