Mayor holds annual State of the City address in North Tonawanda

Austin Tylec said commercial and residential development is a big priority, with the city building 300 new housing units.

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. — North Tonawanda is on track to double the number of new housing units that the state wants.

In Thursday's State of the City address at the historic Riviera Theatre, North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec said commercial and residential development is a big priority, with the city building 300 new housing units.

"We're really just going to be pushing a lot of development," Tylec said. "One of the big things is, if you recall, Governor (Kathy) Hochul asked for a 1 percent increase in residential units over a three-year period. We're projected to double that."

Tylec added: "What that means to me is that people want to live here, they want to work here, they want to play here, it's a really good sign that we are really building a healthy economy here."

The mayor also said construction on the $2 million Sweeney Street bike path will start this year. That path will connect Mayor's Park and the Botanical Gardens.

The city is also pushing for more grant money for a new aquatics center at Payne Park. Construction would start in the spring of 2025.
