NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Niagara Falls Police are investigating a quadruple shooting that happened Thursday night in the city.
According to the Niagara Falls Police Department the shooting happening on 19th St. near Welch Ave. just before 10:30 p.m.
Police say when they arrived officers learned that four people had been shot. A man had already been taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center (NFMMC) in a private car. That victim was later transported to ECMC for emergency surgery for multiple gunshot wounds. He is currently in critical condition.
Two other victims, a man and a woman were found at the scene with gunshot wounds. They were taken by ambulance to ECMC, and have since been treated and released.
The fourth victim, Nivon Smith, ran from the scene when police got there. Officers learned that he was wanted on charges connected to a shooting in the area back on August 26. Officers detained him after a brief chase and realized he had been grazed by a bullet. The officers also recovered a loaded handgun on Smith. He was taken to NFMMC for treatment and then was booked on additional gun charges.
There were some reports that this shooting happened at a vigil, but police say that is not true.
No suspects have been named or arrested in connection with this shooting. The Niagara Falls Police Department says it is coordinating with local and state law enforcement resources to investigate this incident as well as the recent surge of shootings in the city.
