Local firefighter suffers from medical emergency during fire

WHEATFIELD, N.Y. — A firefighter was injured during a fire in Wheatfield early Sunday morning, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

A call reporting the fire at 2164 River Road came in around 1:30 a.m., deputies said.

They added that they saw heavy black smoke coming from a garage that is detached from the residence.

Residents nearby the structure were evacuated to safety, according to officials.

While the firefighters worked to put out the fire, a volunteer firefighter from the Frontier Volunteer Fire Company reportedly suffered from a medical emergency.

As a result, he fell down a flight of stairs and was transported to ECMC by ambulance where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office said.

The damage estimate is not currently available and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
