NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. — As we head into the colder months of the year the Niagara County Sheriff's Department is reminding the community of important safety reminders when children are dressed in layers in a car seat.
In a post made to their social media pages, they mention that bulky snow gear and car seats do not mix. When a car crash happens and a child is dressed in layers it can actually cause a seatbelt to be loose resulting in injuries.
When dressing a child before getting into the car in the winter it is best to use thin fleece-like layers, and then a thick coat can be used after they are buckled in like a backward blanket-like drape.
People should try to avoid seat covers that go behind a child in a car seat, and use those that look more like a sleeping sack.
The Sheriff's Department encourages anyone with questions or helps to contact the Traffic Safety Director, Cathleen Davis at (716)-438-3464. Inspections are free and can save lives.
