'A way to still provide an affordable meal to seniors' Niagara County announces new program

Lunches are available to those 60-years-old and older who reside in Niagara County.

The Niagara County Office for the Aging has teamed up with a local café to offer senior citizens in the county a new program opportunity.

On December 18 the new pilot program launched in a partnership with Sunrise Café in Gasport to offer affordable, quality, and tasty lunches for those older residents in the area.

“OFA operates congregate dining programs across the county, but these are not cost-effective in areas with less population where participation can be inconsistent,” said Darlene DiCarlo, Director of Niagara County OFA.  “We are excited to launch this new program at a private restaurant as a way to still provide an affordable meal to seniors.

Lunches are available to those 60-years-old and older who reside in Niagara County. Those interested can purchase a voucher from the Niagara County Office for the Aging for $3.25.

Vouchers can then be redeemed at the Gasport café, and customers can choose from 3 different lunch options.

The menu to choose from includes milk, coffee, and fruit with any of the following meals

  • Sandwich and Soup of the Day -- Daily sandwich offering and a cup of soup
  • Grilled Vegetable Wrap -- Provolone cheese, garden mix, seasonal vegetables grilled to perfection
  • Cheeseburger -- American, Swiss or Provolone, with choice of Fries, Macaroni or Potato Salad

“We appreciate Renee Tetrault, owner for the Sunrise Café, joining with us to launch this effort,” said DiCarlo.  “If this proves successful, we will look to expand it to other locations throughout Niagara County.”

Vouchers are located for purchase at 111 Main Street in Suite 101 in Lockport from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on business days.
