LOCKPORT, N.Y. — August 7 marks National Purple Heart Day, and Niagara County honored Purple Heart recipients with a ceremonial flag raising.

County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski, was joined by members of Niagara's local Purple Heart Chapter and Veterans Service Agency at the county courthouse to remember and honor residents who have received Purple Hearts.

The Purple Heart is awarded to veterans who were wounded or killed in enemy action while serving in the U.S. military.

"We are committed to the preserving the legacy of brave military personnel who were wounded fighting for our country,” said Jastrzemski.

Niagara County was designated as a Purple Heart County in 2019. Following that distinction, the county holds an official Book of Honor including over 400 names of residents who have received a Purple Heart.

Last year, the county dedicated a Purple Heart monument and courtyard at the Lockport courthouse to honor these residents.

Any resident who has received a Purple Heart or knows of someone who has, living or deceased, can be included in the book. More details and a form of inclusion can be found here
