NFTA announces pause in above-ground Metro Rail service

The suspension will help the NFTA address crucial track bed, catenary, and electrical system upgrades aimed at enhancing the safety and reliability.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A construction project will shut down above-ground Metro Rail service between Monday and Thursday this week.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority said the move will help it address crucial track bed, catenary, and electrical system upgrades to enhance both safety and reliability.

Shuttles will be provided every 20 minutes between the Allen Medical Campus and the Canalside station.

The NFTA is planning another above-ground closure this month, from July 20 to July 29.

“This work is part of our overall plan for rail renewal and necessary in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of our system,” James Morrell, director of public transit, said in a recent statement. “We appreciate the patience and understanding of our passengers during this temporary pause.”
