Poll: Voters back plastic bag ban, tax cap, not keen on Cuomo raise

A new poll finds most registered voters in New York support the plastic bag ban recently passed by the Democrat-controlled state Legislature. They're not so keen on the big pay raise lawmakers approved for Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

ALBANY, N.Y. — A new poll finds most registered voters in New York support the plastic bag ban recently passed by the Democrat-controlled state Legislature. They're not so keen on the big pay raise lawmakers approved for Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The Siena College poll released Tuesday found that 62% of those surveyed said the ban on single-use plastic bags will be good for the state; 33% oppose the ban.

Voters polled also approved by wide margins two other proposals included in the budget: making the 2% local property tax cap permanent and eliminating cash bail for misdemeanors and non-violent felonies.

Cuomo's salary raise from $179,000 to $250,000 by 2021 was opposed, 63%-32%.

The poll of 735 registered voters was conducted April 8-11. It has margin of error of 4.1 percentage points.
