NEW YORK — New legislation from New York State is bringing spirits and cider right to your front door.
Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation allowing New York small crafter makers of spirits, cider, and mead to ship directly to customers. According to the Governor’s office, the new rule was originally created during the COVID-19 pandemic to help spirit and craft manufacturers maintain their businesses during the shutdown but ended in June 2021.
Now, the law will allow these manufacturers to ship their products directly to customers in New York and other states.
Hochul said the legislation will help these small craft producers grow and reach more people.
“This legislation levels the playing field, allowing these small producers to reach new markets and foster economic growth across the state,” she said in a release.
New York State holds the largest number of craft cideries and the second-largest number of distilleries in the country. The Governor’s office said small manufacturers are disadvantaged in distribution channels and reaching licensed retailers. The office said the legislation will create a “new outlet” for customers across the country to access New York’s unique products.
New York State Liquor Authority Chair Lily Fan said the law will support small craft manufacturers in New York.
“This legislation will hopefully support the long-term survival and create another growth spurt of New York’s vibrant craft and farm alcohol producers,” she said.
The law adds to the State's previous initiatives to update Alcoholic Beverage Control laws such as creating temporary permits for manufacturers, adding spirits, beer, and wine to one-day special events, growing outdoor dining, and prolonging drinks-to-go, according to the Governor’s office.
The legislation will go into effect in 90 days, said the office.
