New York preparing for a possible dock workers strike

A strike starting as early as Tuesday could impact ports from Maine to Texas.

ALBANY, N.Y. — A possible strike by dock workers across the east and southeastern United States coasts could impact shipments to New York.

Governor Kathy Hochul said 47,000 workers from Maine to Texas will strike on Tuesday if an agreement is not reached sometime on Monday.

Hochul said that New York has been working to move cargo like food and medical supplies from the ports into the supply chain,

"As conversations between the ILA and USMX continue with a deadline of October 1, New York is prepared to support working families if a strike occurs," Governor Hochul said. "As the deadline looms, I urge the USMX and the ILA to come to an agreement that respects workers and ensures commerce can continue through our nation's busiest ports here in New York."

Hochul said that the strike is not expected to impact ports in Buffalo or in upstate New York.

New York's Department of Health urged hospitals and nursing homes to maintain standards of keeping at least a 60-day supply of critical equipment and needs on hand.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has been working with the trucking industry to make sure that cargo containing medical supplies, essential items and food will be brought to their final destinations.
