BATAVIA, N.Y. — Batavia Police broke ground on a brand new police station and headquarters.
The $15 million project is near Alva Place and Bank Streets at City Centre.
“This is an extremely exciting day for the City of Batavia and especially for the members of the police department and I want to acknowledge the hard work by so many in making this transformative project a reality, including the City Council and city’s management team,” said Batavia City Council President Eugene Jankowski, Jr. “Furthermore, we are forever grateful to Senator Schumer and Chris Jacobs for helping to secure a grant which was critically important for the City to have the capacity to secure the loan from the USDA.”
“The officers and staff are very excited as our new police station will enhance our ability to respond to emergency calls from residents to include medical calls, criminal matters and mental health assistance in a faster and more efficient manner due to the location in the heart of downtown,” said Batavia Police Chief Shawn Heubusch. “The new facility will allow the department to engage better with the community by becoming a place for community events and educational forums, strengthening what is already a strong bond between the Department and the community.”
The new 20,000 square foot facility replaces the current police station that was built back in 1855. The city received funding through a $13 million USDA loan and a $2.5 million grant secured by U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and former Representative Chris Jacobs in 2022.
The new facility should be ready to open next fall.
