Affordable housing for veterans will be coming to Cheektowaga

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation broke ground for a permanent housing complex for veterans.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — One goal is to get rid of homelessness among veterans. There was a groundbreaking ceremony on Harlem Road in the town of Cheektowaga for a new apartment complex.

It will provide affordable housing to more than 90 local vets. It will be called Buffalo Veterans Village.

It will be more than just housing, as needed services will be available to care for the needs of veterans.

"Long-term supportive housing, not just a high-quality housing accommodation for a veteran that may be struggling with homelessness, but access to the necessary supportive services that they need to rehabilitate and reintegrate back into the community," will be available according to Gavin Naples, vice president of the homeless veterans program with Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Tunnel to Towers foundation is a nonprofit that helps first responders, gold star families and military veterans.

"We're going to be offering our Veterans Village with 91 rooms supportive services, including employment assistance, recovery support, financial literacy, behavioral health support, legal advocacy, all for our homeless veterans, because no veteran in this country should ever sleep on the street," said Matthew Mahoney, vice president of Tunnel to Towers.
