According to the National Chicken Council, the buffalo wing goes back to a fateful night in 1964. Co-owner of Anchor Bar Teressa Bellissimo cooked leftover wings in hot sauce for a late-night snack for her son. The dish was a hit and was on menus the next day.
In 1977, Buffalo Mayor Stan Makowski announced July 29 to be National Chicken Wing Day. Now, 47-years later the country continues to celebrate the anniversary.
The organization also posted its rankings on the best wing spots in Buffalo.
