BUFFALO, N.Y. — Thousands of National Grid customers in Erie County lost power on Friday night.
The outages started as far north as Derby and Eden and ran south — along the Thruway , Route 5, and U.S. 62 — down to North Collins, Brant, Farnham, and Irving.
Approximately 9,000 customers lacked power, starting around 7:30 p.m. Friday. Estimated restoration times, depending on where the customers lived, ranged from 9:30 to 9:45 p.m. Friday.
The numbers of customers impacted by the outage dropped to around 6,000 by 9:50 p.m. All power was eventually restored around 10:30 p.m., according to a National Grid spokesperson.
The same area experienced a power outage back on Oct. 3, following an equipment failure at a substation.
Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, on social media, said he was told the cause of the power outage.
"I've been advised about 8,900 @nationalgridus customers are without power in southern Erie county due to a fire at a substation. It is expected most will be re-energized by 9:45 PM," he said.
