Buffalo holds open houses to start National Fire Prevention Week

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Sunday kicks off National Fire Prevention Week, and on Sunday, fire houses across Buffalo held open houses.

Firefighters offered tours, demonstrations, and safety tips for people who dropped by.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told 2 On Your Side that interacting with firefighters would hopefully help children, in particular, know how to respond in an emergency.

"Our firefighters always love bringing the community in to see the work that they do," Mayor Brown said. "And this is also important so children can see firefighters in their gear, so if there's a fire in the home, we want the children to run to the firefighter, not run away from the firefighter."

This year's fire prevention week theme is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you." Firefighters gave out free smoke detectors to those who visited.
