IRVING, N.Y. — A Mohawk veteran lost his home at the beginning of this month. He spent his entire life giving back to others, but now he needs help.
When you've dedicated your entire life to service, you never expect one day you'll need the help yourself. This is what happened to one Vietnam Veteran, who says it's the people around him that's helped him move forward.
Charles Jamieson lost everything he's ever owned during a house fire on December 1. The only thing left from that fire were the clothes he had on and a kneeling bronze soldier statute by the front of his door.
Jamieson also lost his wife around the same time last year and had his car stolen, towed, and then lost another car months later. But even through these tragedies, Jamieson chooses to look on the bright side.
He now dedicates a lot of time to the Iroquois Post 1587 American Legion by doing things like helping other veterans who may need an extra hand.
"Everyone goes through tragedy... It is how you handle it.. and how people around you help you handle it. I'm lucky I've had so many beautiful people," Jamieson said.
With the help of the Post, Seneca Nation, and many others, they've helped Jamieson secure a home. Jamieson does not have any injuries, but he will need help rebuilding and refurnishing his home.
