Mobile food market brings fresh produce to Buffalo's Old First Ward

People had the chance to buy a variety of fruits and vegetables that are currently in season such as apples, pears and cabbage.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo-based organization is helping neighbors in the Old First Ward to have access to fresh, local produce. That area is often referred to as a "food desert" because there isn't a grocery store within walking distance.

Urban Fruits and Veggies teamed up with the Land Conservancy, BlueCross BlueShield, and the Old First Ward Community Center in an effort to help people stay healthy. The collaboration brought together a two-day mobile food market to the Old First Ward Community Center, making fresh produce more accessible.

"Well I think it's about building a culture for the community," said Patrick Gormley, executive director of the Old First Ward Community Association. "I mean, doing it once is great for that day, but we want to build that culture that people want to see this more and more often and revisit these types of markets."
