BUFFALO, N.Y. — Luna the polar bear had her annual checkup this week. According to the zoo, Luna got her yearly vaccinations and a comprehensive health check. The vets also checked Luna's reproductive organs to make sure everything is in working order.
Thursday was the first day Luna and mate, Sakari, were able to roam the Arctic Exchange exhibit at the Buffalo Zoo together for the first time in months. Luna Recently finishing a process called "denning". That's when female polar bears seek out a place to rest for about three months.
"The denning process is specifically geared toward females in the event they do have cubs," Chief Conservation Officer Tiffany Vanderwerf told Channel 2 News.
Vanderwerf says polar bears naturally isolate themselves during a certain time of year. During that time a female would normally go through the denning process for three months before having cubs. In the case of Luna, zoo staff kept her apart from Sakari a while longer so she could receive her physical.
"This is their first day back together and they've already been playing and it's been really fun to watch",
Luna received a clean bill of health!
