When fire crews arrived, they found light smoke coming from the home's basement.  Officials say the homeowner met the fire crews when they arrived, and told them the fire may be under the fireplace in the basement and that he had tried to use his own fire extinguisher on the fire.

Firefighters were able get control of the fire in hidden spaces of the basement and fireplace.

There was minor damage reported to one floor joist and the subfloor above.  There was also some smoke damage to the basement and parts of the first floor.

It took crews approximately 2-hours to ensure the fire was out The residents were home at the time, and will not be displaced. There were no injuries to the occupants or fire crews.

The residents told fire officials they had used their fireplace the night before and that it had been put out before 11 p.m.

Investigators believe that the fire was accidental in nature, and that there may have been a possible issue with the masonry in the base of the fireplace which is being looked into as the cause.

The property damage was reported to total $5,000.
