BUFFALO, N.Y. — Western New York, some big changes are coming to our state-issued IDs. In a little less than a year, standard IDs need to be updated to "Real ID" to enter federal buildings or get through airport security.
"As of May 7th, 2025, you will need a Real ID license to get on a plane," says Erie County Clerk, Mickey Kearns. You can also use a passport as well.
Kearns says you will need your birth certificate, social security card, and at least two documents to prove you live in New York state. A utility bill or mortgage statement will do.
"It seems like a simple thing, but documentation- unification of documentation at the federal level is one level of protection that will protect us in the future."
The switch comes from a signed Congress bill back in 2005. The Department of Homeland Security says the law was passed four years after the 9/11 terrorist attack and calls for higher security standards in the U.S. The law has been pushed back from going into effect several times, including during the pandemic. However, the DHS says the 2025 deadline is firm.
"You need to be what is called "Real ID compliant." If you want to visit Grandma in Ft. Lauderdale after May 7th, 2025, you have to have a real ID or an Enhanced Drivers license," says Mark Schroeder, Commissioner of NYS Department of Motor Vehicles.
If you are married, don't forget that marriage certificate. If you need help with your passport to become "Real ID compliant," Kearns says to visit any of his outreach offices. They can help you with your passport quickly and easily to meet your requirements. For more information click here.
