BUFFALO, N.Y. — New York Governor Kathy Hochul is unveiling new details on the phase two study of the Kensington Expressway
The governor announced the study will not only look into potential improvements along the Kensington, but also tie it into plans for a re-imagined Scajaquada Expressway.
“From the beginning, the Kensington Expressway project has been about righting the wrongs of the past, and after decades of talk and indecision, we are finally delivering the results this community deserves,” Governor Hochul said. “By commencing a study for a second phase, we are committed to exploring new ways to reconnect the community along the Kensington and advancing a greater vision that includes the linked Scajaquada Expressway corridor, enhancing it for residents, visitors and motorists.”
The state will use a report that has been in the works for several years from the the Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council that calls for the reconfiguration of the Scajaquada Expressway into a two-lane roadway that removes all existing ramps to and from the expressway.
That will then create a new parkway from Niagara Street to East Delavan Avenue.
Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes said, “I applaud Governor Hochul and DOT Commissioner Dominguez for their support to see our collective vision realized – to further the goal of ROCC of reconnecting communities and parks. We look forward to working with GBNRTC to reconnect Humboldt Parkway, MLK and Delaware Parks.”
“Ensuring a greener quality of life for residents in the city of Buffalo is important and is a priority for my administration. I thank Governor Kathy Hochul for her continued support of East Buffalo and neighborhoods throughout our great city," said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown.
The New York State Department of Transportation will lead the study and it is expected to be completed by 2027.
