BUFFALO, N.Y. — Cases of Kennel Cough have been reported in the Western New York area.
Two of those cases were at Camp Bow Wow doggy daycare in Tonawanda.
Mark Luczak, owner of Camp Bow Wow said that they see pockets of kennel cough normally pop up in the summertime when people are bringing their dogs to dog parks and outdoor festivals, anywhere where they are interacting with a lot of other dogs.
Luczak said that the easiest symptom of the disease to catch on to first is the loud, honking cough.
Other symptoms would be similar to that of a human's common cold, like runny eyes and nose. He also said that their behavior tends to stay the same.
"Like a cold and a flu for humans, it's not 100 percent guaranteed that every dog in the building is gonna catch it. Some dogs have very good immunity, it's just kind of a random thing."
If you suspect your dog may have Kennel cough, it is best practice to keep your dog home and schedule a vet appointment for them.
Luczyk said that it's "generally not serious, just more of an annoyance with the cough," adding that Veterinarians like to put them on an antibiotic to prevent secondary infection that could turn into something more serious like pneumonia.
