State Assembly bill proposes 15 mph speed limit near stopped ice cream trucks

The goal is to keep children safe and make sure they can enjoy their ice cream without worrying about speeding cars.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — There's a new push by state lawmakers to slow cars down near ice cream trucks across New York.

The State Assembly recently introduced a new bill that would require drivers to slow down to 15 mph when they pass stopped ice cream trucks. The goal is to keep children safe and make sure they can enjoy their ice cream without worrying about speeding cars.

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara — who represents District 111, which is northwest of Albany — is the lawmaker who introduced the legislation in Albany.

"Some of children’s best memories are of hearing the ice cream truck's jingle and running out to get a treat. It's a part of childhood that every kid should enjoy safely," Santabarbara said in a statement. "With summer here and families out enjoying ice cream, this legislation will help keep children safe."

He said 15 mph was selected to align with many school zone speed limits.

"As a father, I know how important it is to keep our children safe. By lowering the speed limit near ice cream trucks, we are helping to prevent accidents and ensuring kids can enjoy these happy moments safely," Santabarbara said.
