BUFFALO, N.Y. — New York State is changing how hunters and trappers can access and print licenses as they kick off 2024-25 season sales.
For the first time, all hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses and tags are now printed on paper instead of plastic stock. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said the change will make them more accessible for people.
"The ability for people to receive their license electronically and print tags at home will make it quicker and easier to get outdoors and connect with nature through hunting and fishing," said Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar.
Hunters and trappers can now print their paper licenses and permits at home after online or phone purchases. The DEC recommends a weatherproof case or bag when tagging animals. Hunters are responsible for protecting the paper tag, so it stays legible and intact, said the DEC.
Another new rule this year is that hunters are not required to wear a back tag while afield in New York State. Hunters are still required to have proof of licensure, either through hard copy or the HuntFishNY app. Electronic tags are not available for 2024-25 as New York State regulations have not yet changed. Tags are still required to be printed and carried.
Licenses and permits can be purchased in three different ways: online, through DEC issuing agents, or by phone at 866-933-2257.
Hunting and trapping licenses are effective from September 1 to August 31 annually, and fishing licenses are valid for a year from the purchase date.
The DEC said that people need the following when buying a license.
- Complete contact information (e.g., name, address, email address, telephone number). If you are requesting that your license and/or tags be emailed, a valid email address is required;
- DEC customer ID number (if applicable);
- Proof of residency (e.g., driver’s license or non-driver’s ID with a valid New York State address);
- If purchasing by phone or internet, a valid credit card; and
- If not already entered in DEC’s automated licensing system, individuals are required to provide proof of hunter or trapper education certification or a copy of a previous license for all hunting and trapping license purchases.
