BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Fire is investigating the cause of a fire on Hammerschmidt Avenue Tuesday.
Firefighters were called for a report of smoke showing from a house on Hammerschmidt Avenue just before 2 p.m. When fire crews arrived on the scene, they saw flames on a second-story porch.
As firefighters battled the blaze, they could see heavy fire conditions in the attic of the home. Division Chief Daniel Bossi says they believe the fire had been going on for a while before they were called due to the number of flames.
Fire crews were able to knock down the fire.
Some residents were in the home at the time of the fire but got out safely. A dog was rescued from the home and reunited with its owners.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Damage is currently estimated to be around $300,000. Six residents will be offered assistance from the American Red Cross.
Division Chief Bossi provides update on investigation:
Buffalo Fire Department-Helmets & Hose Wagons posted on their Facebook page video from the scene showing flames shooting out an upper front window of the home.
Smoke from the fire can be seen for miles around Buffalo.
