High winds cause power outages in Western New York, Southern Tier

NYSEG says about 3,000 customers in Lancaster and Cheektowaga will not see power restored until Monday 'due to the extent of the damage in those areas.'

NEW YORK — Thousands of customers in Western New York and the Southern Tier woke up to windy, rainy conditions and power outages Sunday morning. 

NYSEG reports 5,392 customers without power as of 4:25 p.m. Sunday, down from over 35,000 as of 9 a.m. Sunday.

More than 1,106 National Grid customers are without power as of 4:25 p.m., down from over 15,000 as of 9 a.m. Sunday.

Most of the power outages are in Allegany, Erie, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Genesee and Wyoming counties.

On Sunday evening, NYSEG said "it expects to restore all customers impacted in the affected areas by 11:30 p.m. (Monday)," adding that about 3,000 customers in Lancaster and Cheektowaga will not see power restored until Monday "due to the extent of the damage in those areas."

In the Sunday tatement, NYSEG said, "Company crews have continued work to assess damage, perform make safe activities and make repairs. Crews will continue working throughout the night until every customer is restored."

A representative from National Grid says crews are working actively throughout the day to restore power across Western New York. They expect power to be fully restored to all National Grid customers by 6 p.m. Sunday.
