BUFFALO, N.Y. — One of Buffalo's longstanding Thanksgiving traditions is the YMCA Buffalo Niagara Turkey Trot, and today for the 129th annual race 14,000 people took to the streets running, walking, and just having an overall good time.
The Turkey Trot is the longest consecutively run footrace in the world, according to the YMCA.
Out of all of those who participated two winners have been revealed in the men's and women's groups of the race.
Thomas Appenheimer of Buffalo was the overall Turkey Trot winner and fastest male, finishing the race at 23:47.
Gabrielle Orie of Orchard Park was the fastest female for her second year in a row and crossed the finish line at 26:37.
After the race participants were invited to the post-race party held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.
"Proceeds from the race are used to provide financial assistance to children and families in Western New York who otherwise are unable to participate in YMCA programs and services." the YMCA said.
"Last year, the YMCA allocated more than $1.1 million to provide equitable access for child care, youth development, and healthy living programs to 4,500 local families.
The money raised by the YMCA also goes toward their community outreach programs and funds vital services and programs aimed towards youth development and healthy living.
