BUFFALO, N.Y. — Literacy Buffalo Niagara announced on Thursday they will offer more literacy opportunities including digital and health programs.
In Western New York, 1470,000 people were reported have low literacy rates which is typically linked to poverty and poor health conditions. Data shows that 50% of the chronically unemployed are 'functionally literate' and 76% of adults on public assistance are at some of the lowest literacy levels.
LBN created the Digi-Skills program last year. It focuses on how to use a computer, navigate the internet, participate in telehealth appointments, schedule doctors’ appointments in healthcare portals, search for jobs online, create an email account, use Microsoft Word and more.
Now, the program is expanding into the healthcare system to increase the low health literacy rates in our region.
The health literacy program plans to advance health, reduce disparities and modernize service delivery.
Since many healthcare organizations have transitioned to online portals and digital scheduling, LBN hopes to give low income families and seniors the tools to navigate the digital world.
Research shows that improving literacy produces benefits like better employment, greater financial security and enhanced health.
LBN is the only free adult literacy service in WNY. The organization offers free tutoring in Erie and Niagara county.
