HAMBURG, N.Y. — Western New Yorkers continue helping the survivors of Hurricane Helene.
A donation drive in Hamburg started with a Facebook post, and the response has been so generous, it's going to be extended.
"That's why I call the Town of Hamburg the town that friendship built because that's what happens," said Town of Hamburg Highway Superintendent Ed Hughes.
On Friday, the Town of Hamburg Highway Superintendent posted on social media that the town would be collecting non-perishable items to help people impacted by Hurricane Helene.
"We've got a great response back, and we have one truck already filled, and then we have this truck here, and it's filling up today," said Ed Hughes.
The donations are going to Hamburg VFW Post 1419 which will make sure they get to people who need them in Asheville, North Carolina.
"My heart goes out to them because of everything that they're going through," said Ed Hughes.
"What kind of stuff do you need?" asked 2 On Your Side's Kelly Dudzik.
"Everything from water to clothes to cleaning supplies. Asheville got hit pretty hard. That's where all this stuff is going to end up going to Asheville," said Ed Hughes.
The response has been so great, they'll be collecting donations again on Tuesday from 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
Highway Superintendent Ed Hughes says he loves seeing how people from Hamburg just jump in to help people they've never met.
"That's what we do here. I mean, it's just everything. That's why I love this town because it's just everybody comes together in a time of need," said Ed Hughes.
The Town of Hamburg Highway Department is at 2720 Lakeview Road, and you'll see the donations on the left when you pull into the driveway.
