Fire sweeps through Southtowns apartment building

One person said he lost everything, including 2 cats, in the overnight fire.

HAMBURG, N.Y. — A fire swept through an apartment building in the Town of Hamburg overnight, displacing the people who lived there.

The Town of Hamburg dispatch center received a call around 2 a.m. Friday for a structure fire at 4256 North Street. Everyone inside the four-unit apartment building was able to safely exit the building.

Newton Abbott Fire Company extinguished the fire with help from several other fire companies.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Town of Hamburg resident Robert Gemerek told 2 On Your Side he lived in one of the apartments for about 14 years and lost all of his belongings. He said he struggled to get out of the apartment because of the smoke.

Gemerek said he lost everything, including two cats, in that fire.

"I've never seen anything like this before. I lived here for about 14 years. Yeah, I mean, I liked living here, and I'm just sad that this happened, and that I wasn't able to save my cats."
