GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — A new pilot program at Grand Island Central School District is integrating artificial intelligence into teaching and learning every day.
Starting this school year, Grand Island Senior High School will be using artificial intelligence inside and outside the classroom. They are the only district in Western New York to have this specific program.
It's called Khanmigo and its for their students and teachers. The AI tutor will be available for students 24-hours a day and seven days a week for the entire year.
It's text-based so the student can type to Khanmigo and then it will type back to the student.
This is a program Grand Island Senior High School principal Hillary Kretz-Harvey has worked to get inside her district.
She said it is important to note that Khanmigo will not give the student the answer. It will use Socratic and cognitive coaching to help the student think, process and eventually move toward the right answer on their own.
"It will not only extend the level of instruction for our students who have already accomplished mastery on a particular topic or concept but also students who are having more difficulty. It will help streamline that process breaking down topics and concepts for our students to be able to ensure that we are addressing all of their learning gaps," Kretz-Harvey said.
Khanmigo helps with not only math, but also science and other subjects. It will feature lesson planning for teachers, collect data of the students and help the school with personalized learning for their students.
