Grand Island 8th grader described as 'a beautiful soul who touched the lives of many in our community'

In an update the Grand Island superintendent asked the community to support one another with kindness, following the death of an 8th grade student.

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — The Grand Island Central School District shared on Wednesday night that an 8th student was tragically killed after being struck by a vehicle.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office says they were called to South State Parkway and Broadway around 8 p.m. for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. When deputies arrived on the scene, a witness was already performing lifesaving efforts.

Deputies took over CPD with an AED until the Grand Island Fire Department and Twin City Ambulance arrived on scene.

While the Erie County Sheriff's Office is not identifying the person struck, Grand Island Schools identified her as Leah Mayer. Mayer died at the scene.

Investigators say this is still an open investigation.

Superintendent Dr. Brian Graham described Leah as, "one of those children or students that glow from inside, she has this incredible light that not only resonates with her personality but also her selflessness."

The area where Leah was struck and killed is known as a busy intersection, according to neighbors.

"I took my son for a walk with his bike and we were crossing that exact intersection towards the evening and a car almost hit us. They didn't slow down, it was a big truck and it came barreling I grabbed my son and we ran across the street. It's haunted me ever since," said Mindi Joss.

Joss and her children live near the busy intersection. This morning, she created a petition, for better signage at the intersection.

"Speaking with neighbors and friends, they've had the same experience. Even when I'm driving there, I feel so nervous because there's so many ways to look, who has the right of way, what's going on really feel like there should be a stop sign, a light would be preferred, something for people to cross. something that lets cars know that people are coming," said Joss.

Grand Island School's Superintendent Dr. Brian Graham shared this statement with district families:

With the permission of her family, I am writing to share the name of the precious student we tragically lost in yesterday’s accident. We mourn the loss of Leah Mayer, a beautiful soul who touched the lives of many in our community. Her parents, Amy and Adam, are heartbroken, as we all are, and have asked that we remember Leah for the incredible light she brought to those around her.

Leah was selfless, a loyal friend, and a constant source of positivity. Her energy seemed to glow from within, and she was known as a “voice” for others, always ready to stand up and support those around her. Her presence will be missed dearly, but her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.

As we come together to support one another during this time, I want to caution our community regarding any solicitations for funds that may appear on social media. To date, the family has not created or endorsed a “GoFundMe” page, so please be cautious of any such requests that have not been verified by the family.  If Leah’s family does endorse a system to generate donations, I will communicate that to everyone in our community.

Grief support services will continue tomorrow at both our middle and high school campuses. These services are available for any students, faculty, and staff who may benefit from them. Our school counselors, social workers, school psychologists and administrators are here to provide the support and care needed during this difficult time.

Please continue to keep Leah and her family in your thoughts and prayers, and thank you for your ongoing compassion and strength.

Dear Grand Island Families, It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of a heartbreaking tragedy that has...
