GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — Grand Island Bridges and I-190 are getting $1.5 million for bridge improvement and rehabilitation aimed at design and environmental work.
The funding focuses on developing a comprehensive framework for the future of the four Grand Island Bridges. It is part of the Bridge Improvement Program Grant through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
Congressman Tim Kennedy of the 26th district, representing the area south of Lake Ontario to Lackawanna, announced the funding.
“Now, development and planning can kick into full gear, restoring parts of the Grand Island Bridges and I-190 Corridor, making it safer and more efficient for travelers making roughly 13 million trips each year.”
Kennedy said the funding would strengthen the infrastructure of the bridges that date back to 1935 and create well-paying union jobs.
Thruway Authority Executive Director Frank G. Hoare, Esq. said the bridges are becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and the funding will help rehabilitate the roads.
“The Authority will be able to create a sustainable roadmap for ensuring the continued safe, efficient, and sustainable movement of people, goods, and services,” he said.
According to Hoare, the Grand Island Bridges link an estimated $23,7 billion in US-Canada trade.
