Garbage truck driver had a suspended license when boy was struck, critically injured

DPW Commissioner Nate Marton said the city is investigating how the driver was able to stay on the job despite having his license revoked.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo's Department of Public Works commissioner on Saturday confirmed Saturday that a garbage truck driver with a suspended license hit and critically injured a teenage boy.

In a statement, Commissioner Nate Marton told 2 On Your Side the city is investigating how the driver was able to stay on the job despite having his license revoked.

The city will also be looking at the employee's actions behind the wheel leading up to the accident.

The 17-year-old victim is still recovering at Oishei Children's Hospital. The boy was most recently listed in critical condition after undergoing surgery for multiple internal injuries.

The City of Buffalo said the incident happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. That's when a city garbage truck backed up and struck the boy, who was on his way to school, causing serious injuries.

The accident remains under investigation, according to city officials, who added that the garbage truck was impounded. It's being held at the Seneca Street garage.

The 46-year-old driver of the garbage truck is suspended "without pay, pending further review of the incident," Marton said Wednesday.
