'Free fishing weekend' across New York State this weekend

Gov. Hochul is encouraging New Yorkers to try fishing at no cost during the last weekend of June.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Get your rods and reels ready.  It's Free Fishing Weekend in New York State.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that on June 29 and 30, New Yorkers can fish for free across the state.

During the two days, the license requirement will be waived for freshwater fishing across the state.

“There’s no better time for aspiring anglers to try freshwater fishing than a free fishing weekend,” Governor Hochul said. “New York is home to numerous freshwater lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers, allowing for memorable fishing experiences for anglers new and novice, as well as friends and family.”

The Free Fishing Days program began back in 1991 and has continued ever since.

The program looks to give people who might not fish a chance to go out and try the activity at no cost. It aims to introduce New Yorkers to a new hobby and promote conservation support across the state.

“Summer break is almost here, and New York’s free fishing days provide the perfect opportunity for anyone eager to try fishing for the first time," New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar said.

"With a wide variety of freshwater settings and sportfish species, anglers have a wide range of fishing experiences to choose from.”
