Former Buffalo city official Robert Delano has died

Prosecutors accused Delano of forcing city parks employees to handle private projects and various other activities at taxpayers' expense.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A former City of Buffalo official who was convicted and served time for his early 1990s conviction on federal racketeering, extortion, and other counts has passed away.

Former Buffalo Parks and Recreation commissioner Robert Delano served in the administration of Mayor Jimmy Griffin, who reportedly defended his department chief as just a tough boss.

Prosecutors at the time accused him of forcing city parks employees to handle private projects and various other activities at taxpayer expense. In May of 1993, Delano was sentenced to federal prison on racketeering and corruption charges.

Delano died on Aug. 1, 2024, at the age of 83.
