TONAWANDA, N.Y. — The City of Tonawanda Mayor John White announced last wee there will be changes made to this year's 4th of July fireworks display.
In a post on social media, the mayor cited that due to fire regulations, it was decided that the City of Tonawanda cannot safely or legally display them in Niawanda Park.
In the post, the mayor he wrote, "I along with officials from the City of Tonawanda Fire Department, physically went to the park and measured to be sure that this in fact was true. A barge anchored out in the Niagara River was the next option, but the cost was almost as much as the fireworks, none of which can our taxpayers afford, nor could sufficient sponsorships be realized. "
He added, "Taking all of the above into consideration, I have teamed up with North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec to jointly provide fireworks for both our communities to enjoy. This partnership will provide not only a show that will double in length, but also incorporate displays soaring 600-800ft in the air; visible I am assured, down to the Grand Island Bridge."
More information will be shared in the coming days in regards to those who have stepped up to co-sponsor the Twin Cities conjoining display Mayor White noted.
The display will be held on Friday, July 5 at dusk off of Tonawanda Island.
