AMHERST, N.Y. — Firefighters found a woman dead inside a home Saturday evening in Amherst.

The Eggertsville Hose Company responded to the fire, which began shortly past 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Initial reports said there was possibly a person inside the home on the 200 block of Callodine Avenue, just west of Bailey Avenue and north of the University at Buffalo South Campus.

When firefighters arrived, they found a heavy fire in the back of the home and called for a second alarm. Eggertsville Fire Chief Brandon Peters said cluttered conditions in the home hampered efforts to control the fire, and that a woman was found dead inside the home by crews.

The fire was placed under control at 5:12 p.m. There was an estimated $125,000 in damages to the structure and $60,000 to the contents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Town of Amherst Fire Inspectors’ Office and Amherst Police.
