Fire axes from USS Buffalo find new home in namesake city

The axes were donated to the Main-Transit Fire Department, the Buffalo Fire Department, and the Edward M. Cotter boat during a ceremony.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Three official USS Buffalo fire axes recently completed a cross-country trek from Washington state before finding a new home here in Buffalo.

The axes were donated to the Main-Transit Fire Department, the Buffalo Fire Department, and the Edward M. Cotter boat during a Saturday ceremony at the Buffalo Naval Park.

The axes were used for the past 35 years by the crew of the USS Buffalo, which was part of the Pacific Fleet.

"Our nation owes the sailors that served on the USS Buffalo a tremendous 'thank you' for all your sacrifices to keep this country safe throughout its many successful deployments," Jim Dentinger, president of McGuire Development, said in a release.

The Naval Park also plans to use the other artifacts in an interactive exhibit about the submarine.
