BUFFALO, N.Y. — It’s been almost 10 years since Jeffery Goldsmith lost his sister Dee Dee.
Now he feels like he’s losing her again.
In October 2014, Dee Dee was found dead on the steps of Masten Park. It’s believed she was calling for help but no one could see her. Her killer has still not been found.
That’s because of several weeds and high grass covering the area. Jeffery says it’s becoming a problem again.
“This has been neglected for 10 years,” he said.
A mural now sits behind the stairs in Dee Dee’s honor, but again, she’s hidden by the grass.
Jeffery has spent years trying to get the city to cut the grass so the mural can be visible from the street. He’s even tried to do it himself, but the city won’t allow him to, saying it’s too much of a liability.
2 On Your Side made numerous attempts to try to reach the City’s Parks and Recreation Department Wednesday night but did not hear back either.
Jeffery is now left hoping someone will answer his calls so that no one else has to experience what his sister did.
Ten years later, he’s in the same spot — just trying not to lose her again.
“Those people who did that to her might be dead and gone,” he said. “I still want them to see that she's still here in our hearts and she's still here on this wall.”
The city on Thursday shared photos of the glass being cut. A City of Buffalo spokesperson told 2 On Your Side that the area had been on the schedule to be cut and trimmed down every June and September.
