NYS Police prepare for 4th of July drivers

Governor Kathy Hochul announced more state police will work alongside local law enforcement this year to crack down on 4th of July distracted drivers.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The busiest travel weekend of the summer is near and both local state law enforcement is getting ready to keep the roads safe and crack down on reckless driving. 

Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday the addition of extra patrols that will be out to keep roads safe. 

"We want New Yorkers to have fun this holiday weekend, but we also want them to do so responsibly," Governor Hochul said in a release. 

Starting today at 6 p.m. the enforcement period will go into effect and will run through the holiday weekend until Sunday, July 7, at midnight.  

More than 35,000 tickets were issued  last year during the holiday enforcement period according to the Governor's office. Officers will be conducting sobriety checkpoints to target aggressive driving and keep travelers safe.

Beginning on Wednesday, July 3 construction related lane closures on select thruway projects will be suspended to help ease the flow of traffic. 

From July 4 through July 8 drivers can also expect temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction to be suspended along state highways. 

The New York State Thruway Authority warns motorists that roadwork may continue for emergency repairs. 

Drivers traveling over the holiday weekend are encouraged to use text stops, rest stops, and service areas to safely make calls and texts off the road to reduce distracted driving.
