BUFFALO, N.Y. - 911 has long been the number to call for immediate help during emergencies.
You can now text 911 for assistance in Erie County.
Wednesday, County Executive Mark Poloncarz introduced "Text 911." Leaders say this will be especially beneficial to individuals with specific disabilities as well as in situations, such as domestic violence or home invasions, where it is dangerous or impossible to make an actual phone call.
But they also say telephone calls are still the preferred method of communication in most emergency situations.
