Over $550K in federal grants are coming to Erie County fire departments

The funding is part of two federal programs focused on increasing staffing and safety.

ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. — New federal money is coming to Erie County fire departments to help fund operations, safety, and staffing.

Eight fire departments in the county are receiving a total of $559,543.17 through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) programs. The funds are aimed at bettering fire response, support staffing, and safety, according to U.S. Rep. Tim Kennedy and U.S. Rep. Nick Langworthy's offices.

"Importantly, this funding will invest in the protective gear and equipment that will better keep firefighters safe and healthy on and off duty," Congressman Kennedy said.

Here is how the money breaks down.

AFG Grants:

  • Buffalo Fire Department: $72,000 for 15 sets of personal protection equipment.
  • Depew Fire Department: $32,879.04 for an industrial washer and dryer to help remove possible cancer-causing carcinogens on firefighter gear and equipment.
  • East Seneca Volunteer Fire Company, West Seneca Fire District 4: $62,641.90 for an ambulance power lift system to better load and unload patients.
  • Scranton Volunteer Fire Company, Hamburg: $80,622.53
  • Angola: $67,428.57
  • North Collins: $91,971.13

SAFER Grant:

  • Evans Center Volunteer Fire Co in Angola: $152,000.00

The FEMA AFG program is focused on funding for equipment, safety gear, and training to boost safety for fire departments. SAFER aims to increase staff and retain firefighters.

Congressman Langworthy said the funding is essential for fire departments.

"Our first responders face significant risks every day, and these funds will provide them with the equipment and resources needed to carry out their duties safely and effectively, as well as provide for recruitment and retention efforts," Langworthy said in a statement.

The funds for the AFG program are part of $324 million given out across the country to support firefighters' safety, training, and equipment.
