Benedict House to close due to lack of funds

BUFFALO, NY - Officials at Buffalo's Benedict House had some shocking news Thursday. They say a loss of funding has left them with no other choice but to close their doors.

The home was founded in the late 1980s to help people living with HIV and AIDS. It's a blow to those who are attached to its historical value in the community and what it meant to helping HIV and AIDs patients then. But the reasons behind why it's closing may actually be good news.

The Benedict House is constructed for congregrate-style living, which means it's basically like living in a dormitory. It was meant to be short-term housing because in the late '80s and early '90s, people who developed the virus usually died. That's not the case anymore due to changing medicine and best practices for treating those patients.

Now those living with HIV and AIDs are doing just that – living -- and that means they need housing that supports longer lives.
