Local University creates summer programs for WNY students

D'Youville University is creating a pipeline to help Western New York youth excel in education.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — D'Youville University is creating a pipeline to help Western New York youth excel in education. Many of the young people who go through their programming are often first-generation and low-income students.

D'Youville University is the site for Buffalo Prep's 'Prep Scholars Academy Program' this summer. The goal is to empower these first-generation and low income students in the area so that they can graduate high school and reach their college dreams.

The five-week academic program is culturally relevant and the focus this year is to connect the environment to the community. Students are looking into things in our community that were affected by certain environments that we can't control, like the Buffalo Blizzard that happened nearly two years ago.

They teach these examples through math, science, social studies and ELA. One of the activities they are learning during the program is how to build energy houses so that they know how to help and protect themselves.

"It's really good because in school you don't get to do the things that you do her," Adam Guarino, Buffalo Prep scholar.

The program also offers bilingual education.

D'Youville Univeristy also has a healthcare opportunity program that brings in high school students to prepare for successful college careers in the healthcare. There is opportunities to volunteer at local healthcare facilities, get First Aid and CPR certified and overnight opportunities on campus for college exposure.
