DUNKIRK, N.Y. — Dunkirk Harbor’s breakwater now as the funding to undergo repairs.
The Buffalo District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced $7.56 million has been awarded to a Michigan-based company to complete the repairs.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the repairs are “essential,” and protect “the local homes, businesses and waterfront recreation industry that make this area so special.”
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) says the repairs will ensure the harbor is usable. It is aimed to protect waterfront activities, provide shelter to ships, and add to the Dunkirk economy.
“Dunkirk Harbor is a critical component of the Great Lakes Navigation System, supporting economic growth in the local economy,” added Lt. Col. Robert Burnham, USACE Buffalo District commander. “We look forward to delivering this project on time and within budget, ensuring Dunkirk’s waterfront continues serving the local community and the country.”
The repairs will include a 1,450-foot stone overlay on the lake side of the breakwater and a wrap-around of the east head of the outer breakwater.
“Dunkirk Harbor is not just a local gem, but a vital economic engine for Western New York and the entire region,” noted Congressman Nicholas Langworthy. “Securing the much-needed repairs to the breakwater will protect local jobs, enable economic growth, and keep our waterways safe.
Construction is set to begin soon and is expected to be finished by 2025.
According to USACE, the harbor generates about $196,000 in net income annually and is supported by 24 charter fishing boats.
